About ten million Americans will have plastic surgery. More than a few patients are reporting less-than-desired outcomes.

The range of botched cosmetic procedures can run from the less than the desired outcome; to life threatening cases like Jeanette Bernal and Alexander Baez who are victims of the Butcher of South Beach.

10 Ways to Avoid Being a Victim:

1. Make sure you doctor is licensed and has insurance..check your state's licensing board or our site:

www.aronfeld.com.

2. Check the local hospital and see if the doctor has staff privileges.

3. Confirm if the doctor has insurance.  Ask for his insurance policy, limits and confirm it with the company.  In Florida, insurance is not required to practice medicine.

4. Speak to actual patients.  Ask them their experience with the doctor both before and after the surgery.  Verify that the before and after pictures are actual patients. I have seen cases where the doctor showed my client photographs of people who were not only not his patients but had not had surgery.

5. Some cut-rate practitioners also handle the anesthesia during the operation.  That means they have twice the work to do and their attention is divided.

6. Schedule your procedure to be the first one for the doctor that day.  Some practitioners will perform several procedures in one day. A typical plastic surgery usually lasts no longer than four and one-half to five hours. But in bargain basement offices, I've seen some cases where the practitioner operates for 11 and 12 hours.

7. Ask about the doctor's particular training and experience in that procedure.  Liposuction is art as well as science, physicians say. But a practitioner who has taken only a weekend course before seeing patients for liposuction services often leaves, not a smooth contour in the body, but "divots" in the flesh, spots where too much fat was removed.

8.  Demand that the doctor is board certified. That means he or she has had a year of hands-on experience at the side of an established, older surgeon and has met vigorous standards in the industry.

9.  Shop around. "If you get any pressure about a low, low price being good for today only, a huge red warning flag should go up" .

10.  Remember, this is surgery.  Take it seriously and be careful, as your life is in the hands of the surgeon.
